• Q: Can you give me information on how sponsorship works?
A: The rate is $32 per month. That provides support at the local project for the child you choose. That child would take part in the project activities which vary from project to project because of cultural differences. It is a daily or 2-3x weekly activity. They are getting tutoring, food, books, vocational training, bible training. All projects are through local churches that are already there. We don’t go in and set up Compassion project, we partner with a local church that is already there and we help to enhance what they are doing. There are guidelines on our side they have to agree to and they have guidelines we have to agree to in order to partner. We then work together to set up a project that supports up to 350 kids per church. Kids also get medical care, doctor visits, and dental visits.

• Q: Do you have doctors on staff or do you work with local doctors?
A: We work with local doctors. We partner with some other organizations that might come and provide those kinds of things or we work with a local doctor that would like to help out in their community. We do pay for the doctor visits and the dental visits. We do our best to keep that cost as low as possible. They receive clothing, they receive vaccinations, and they receive mosquito netting. There is a lot that happens just because of the $32 per month. There are some overhead costs. Of the $32 you send, 83-85 percent will make it to the actual project. That is very high, that is at the highest range of any non-profit organization. We are graded by several watchdog organizations that look at charitable organizations like us. Out of several hundred organizations, we are in the top 40, always getting the highest marks each year. There is probably no other place that I know of that you could give to that your money could go the farthest and have the greatest impact.

• Q: Do you make sure the sponsored children are in school?
A: As much as we can. Now, the project is not school, it is in addition to school. We do give any additional help we can through tutoring. In many cases, kids are able to continue in school because the project exists. In some cases, families can’t afford to send their kids, but now they can because of the sponsorship. We encourage the kids to stay in school and help them however we can, in addition to the vocational training we offer at the project. There is an attendance requirement for the project, but not for church attendance, because we are in areas where Christianity is the minority. The kids are not forced to attend church, but they are going to get exposed to it.

• Q: What makes you stand out from the other organizations?
A: Compassion is the only organization working through the local church. Compassion has a strong commitment to the one-to-one partnership. We are not a relief organization. We are focused on the individual children trapped in poverty and give them the tools and encouragement to get out of it. We are unquestionably and unapologetically Christian.
